SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT WITNESS STATEMENT CASE #: SH-1995-013 DATE: October 13, 1995 TIME: 02:31 AM WITNESS: [REDACTED] ADDRESS: 1847 Harvest Hills Dr, San Bernardino, CA INTERVIEWING OFFICER: Det. J. Kirby [BEGIN TRANSCRIPT] DET. KIRBY: State your name for the record. WITNESS: [REDACTED]. I live at [REDACTED] Harvest Hills Drive. The blue house with the... with the garden gnomes. DET. KIRBY: Tell me what you saw tonight. Start from the beginning. WITNESS: I couldn't sleep. Haven't been sleeping good since the Sheridans... you know. So I was looking out my kitchen window around 11:30, maybe 11:40. DET. KIRBY: Which direction does your kitchen window face? WITNESS: Toward the Sykes property. The old one. Leslie Sykes used to live there before he... before whatever happened to him. DET. KIRBY: What did you see? WITNESS: There was someone in the backyard. At first I thought it was an animal, maybe a coyote, but it was walking upright. It was... shiny. DET. KIRBY: Can you elaborate on "shiny"? WITNESS: Like wet. But not wet. Like when you see heat waves off asphalt, but at night. It hurt to look at directly. Made my eyes water. DET. KIRBY: What was this person doing? WITNESS: Drawing something. On the ground, with something dark. Looked like paint but... thicker. The smell came through my closed window. DET. KIRBY: What did it smell like? WITNESS: Copper. Iron. You know what it smelled like, Detective. DET. KIRBY: What was being drawn? WITNESS: A triangle. Big one. Maybe ten feet on each side. Perfect angles. How does someone draw perfect angles in the dark? DET. KIRBY: Did you see the person's face? WITNESS: No. Yes. I don't know. When he turned toward my house, there was a face but it was wrong. Too many shadows in the wrong places. Or maybe the shadows were the face. I closed my curtains after that. DET. KIRBY: What happened next? WITNESS: I heard a sound. Like singing but not singing. Like when you run your finger on a wine glass rim but deeper. Coming from thirteen different directions at once. That's when the lights went out. DET. KIRBY: The power went out? WITNESS: No. The lights. The stars. Everything went dark for exactly thirteen seconds. I counted. When the lights came back, the triangle was glowing. DET. KIRBY: Glowing how? WITNESS: Faint red. Pulsing. Like a heartbeat. Then I heard the screaming from the Sheridan house. DET. KIRBY: What time was this? WITNESS: 11:47. Exactly 11:47. My kitchen clock stopped at 11:47. DET. KIRBY: Is there anything else you remember? WITNESS: The number thirteen. He kept saying it. "Thirteen to open, thirteen to close, thirteen to harvest what the darkness knows." DET. KIRBY: Did you recognize the voice? WITNESS: [LONG PAUSE] It sounded like Leslie Sykes. But Leslie Sykes disappeared three years ago. DET. KIRBY: Are you certain? WITNESS: I'm not certain of anything anymore, Detective. But I know what I saw. And I know the Sheridans are dead. And I know there will be more unless you stop him. DET. KIRBY: Stop who? WITNESS: The shiny man. Mr. Shiny. That's what the kids started calling him after the first murders. They see him in their dreams now. All of them. Every kid in Harvest Hills dreams about Mr. Shiny. [END TRANSCRIPT] NOTES: Witness appeared sober, coherent, but extremely distressed. Similar details corroborated by three other neighbors. Kitchen clock confirmed stopped at 11:47 PM.
