I'm getting really concerned about the speed of cars on Forest View Drive, especially near the school zone.

This morning I was walking my daughter to school and a pickup truck flew by us going at least 45 mph - the speed limit is 25! My daughter was so startled she dropped her backpack.

I've been thinking we need speed bumps or at least more speed limit signs. Does anyone know how we go about petitioning the county for this? I can't be the only parent who's noticed this problem.

Our kids' safety should be the top priority!

Carol, I drive Forest View every day to get to work and I have to disagree. Most people are driving pretty reasonably.

Speed bumps would be a nightmare for those of us who commute through there daily. They're hard on your car and slow down emergency vehicles too.

Maybe the issue is more about teaching kids to be aware of their surroundings when walking near the road?

Greg, with all due respect, these are elementary school children we're talking about. Yes, we teach road safety, but a 6-year-old shouldn't have to worry about cars going twice the speed limit.

As someone who works at Highland Elementary, I can tell you Carol is absolutely right. I've seen multiple near-misses during school hours. We've had parents complaining about this for months.

I wanted to chime in here as someone who patrols that area regularly.

We have received several complaints about speeding on Forest View Drive, particularly during school hours. I've been doing more frequent speed monitoring in that area over the past few weeks.

For those interested in requesting traffic calming measures like speed bumps, you need to contact the Miller County Public Works Department. They require a petition with signatures from at least 60% of affected residents.

In the meantime, we'll continue to monitor the area and issue citations when appropriate.

I'll sign any petition Carol puts together! I've lived on Forest View for 12 years and the speeding has definitely gotten worse.

Last week a car was going so fast it couldn't stop for Mrs. Patterson's little dog that got loose. Thankfully the dog was okay, but it was a close call.

Some of us older residents have trouble crossing the street safely too. It's not just about the school children.

Thank you Officer Torres for the information about the petition process!

I've already gotten 15 signatures just from neighbors I've talked to this weekend. Linda, Nancy, and several other parents from the school have agreed to help circulate the petition.

I'll keep everyone updated on our progress. Hopefully we can make Forest View Drive safer for everyone - kids, pets, and pedestrians alike.
