⚠️ HEAT WAVE WARNING

National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for our area this weekend (July 24-26, 2010). Temperatures expected to reach 110°F+ with little overnight cooling.

Hello Miller County residents,

With the extreme heat expected this weekend, we want to make sure everyone in our community stays safe and healthy. Here are some important safety reminders:

Stay Hydrated:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration
  • If you're working outside, drink water every 15-20 minutes

Stay Cool:

  • Limit outdoor activities to early morning or evening hours
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
  • Use air conditioning if available, or visit public cooling centers
  • Never leave children, elderly, or pets in parked vehicles

Check on Neighbors:

  • Elderly residents and those with health conditions are most at risk
  • Offer to help neighbors with errands during cooler hours
  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, headache

Emergency: If someone shows signs of heat stroke (high body temperature, altered mental state, hot/dry skin), call 911 immediately.

Stay safe, Miller County!

Thank you for this important reminder! I'm already making plans to check on my elderly neighbors this weekend.

For anyone who needs a cool place to stay, the Highland Park Community Center will be open as a cooling center from 10 AM - 8 PM Saturday and Sunday. Free water and snacks available.

Great safety information from the Health Department. From a law enforcement perspective, we want to add:

We'll be doing extra patrols this weekend to check on welfare and assist anyone in distress. If you see someone who appears to be suffering from heat-related illness, don't hesitate to call 911.

Also, with everyone staying indoors more, please remember to lock your doors and windows even when you're home. We've had some reports of increased suspicious activity in the area lately.

Deputy Mendoza, can you give us more details about this suspicious activity? As a mom with young kids, I want to make sure we're taking appropriate precautions.

For the heat wave, I'm planning to set up sprinklers in our backyard for the neighborhood kids to play in during the early evening hours. All parents welcome to bring their little ones over!

The Miller County Red Cross chapter will also be assisting with cooling center operations this weekend. We have volunteers trained in heat emergency response if needed.

We're also organizing wellness check teams to visit homebound residents. If you know of anyone who might need checking on and doesn't have family nearby, please PM me their information.

Everyone please stay safe and look out for each other during this extreme heat!

Thank you everyone for the helpful information and for checking on each other. This community really comes together during difficult times.

My air conditioning went out yesterday, but my neighbor Jim (JimSecurityGuy on here) came right over and got it working again. It's neighbors like him that make Miller County such a special place to live.

Stay cool everyone, and keep drinking that water!
